Chennai Super Kings(CSK) bought former
India batsman Robin Uthappa for Rs 2 crore in the Indian Premier League (IPL) super auction in
2022. Uthappa is 36 years old, but he was instrumental in Chennai Super Kings capturing the IPL
2021 title.
Uthappa earned 115 runs with a strike rate of 136.9 in four IPL 2021 matches, including a critical 63 against Delhi Capitals in Qualifier 1. However, Uthappa now believes that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) should consider ending the auction since cricketers are treated as 'cattle'.
Uthappa commented that it was a dream of his to play for a team like CSK. He is glad to be back in an environment where he can feel safe and respected. There is a support system in place that makes him feel as if he can accomplish anything.
Nevertheless, Uthappa said that the auction is similar to an "examination," with the results taking a long time to come in. It's as if you're being compared to a product. He said that honestly, he felt like a livestock. It is not the most pleasant sensation, and he believes that's the problem with cricket, particularly in India. He explained that everything about a player is on display for the rest of the world to see, assess, and comment on. He remarked that it is one thing to have an opinion on accomplishments, but it's quite another to have an opinion on how much one should be sold for.
Uthappa, who has scored 4,722 runs at a strike rate of over 130 in 193 IPL matches, admits that it can be discouraging when a player goes unclaimed and it appears that his value has dropped suddenly.
He further commented that we can't comprehend what it's like for the guys who aren't sold, it can't possibly be pleasant. His heart breaks for the cricketers who have been there for a long time and they didn’t end up being chosen.
