Gujarat Titans' Shubman Gill got out for a duck in the team's opening match of IPL 2022 against Lucknow Super Giants at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium on Monday. Former India batsman Virender Sehwag did not withhold his opinion regarding Gill's performance.

Gill, who was batting first for the Titans in their 159-run chase, made a wild shot and was out without scoring after just facing three balls. Gill recently stated that he had learned some 'cheeky shots,' to which Sehwag responded that a batter like Gill did not have to add anything new to his arsenal. Sehwag emphasised Gill's batting approach and suggested ways for the young opener to enhance his approach.

Sehwag said to the press that he believes Gill is an ODI batsman. The reason being in T20 cricket, guys who can knock boundaries at will inside the Powerplay are the ones who go far. Sehwag believes this is the area in which Gill must improve. Sehwag commented that Gill has made statements to the effect that he has learned certain cheeky shots, but that he does not need to play cheeky shots because of his batting. Even if he just plays regular cricket, he can get the team off to a better start.

The former Indian batter gave instances of some of Indian cricket's and the IPL's best openers, describing how they were able to thrive without trying too hard and raise their strike rate just by staying at the crease.

He also stated that Gill must remember that when it comes to T20 cricket, he either plays too fast or too slow. Gill had a strike rate of 120 last year, and they thought he should enhance it. Sehwag hopes Gill doesn't start at 150 this year and get off track. Badoni and Hooda demonstrated that strike rate can be enhanced while playing normally.

He added that Gill, on the other hand, has to get there. He gets out after scoring 25-30 runs. Once he hit 60, 70, or 80, his strike rate will rise. That is the time he has the freedom to explore. He remarked that neither Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, or himself play those daring strokes as openers. Sehwag reckons one can score runs and score fast without being “cheeky”.
