Cricket Australia came to Kolkata to play
against India after winning 16 consecutive Tests. In 2001, India, led by Sourav Ganguly, stopped
winning streak in white-clad cricket. India won the series 2-1.
If India had not won that series, the captain of Indian cricket would have lost the captaincy.
Harbhajan Singh, one of the former best spinners of India, has given such explosive information.
Harbhajan's remarks created a hue and cry in the cricket world.
Anil Kumble, one of the most reliable spinners of the team, got injured before that series. Just
then, captain Sourav decided to take Harbhajan as a substitute cricketer. Because, at that
moment, there was no such good spinner. Sourav also got the result of taking Harbhajan.
Despite losing the first Test in Mumbai, India won the remaining two matches in Kolkata and
Chennai to win the series. Harbhajan took 32 wickets in three matches in that series.
Speaking about playing in that series, the right-handed spinner said, "If Sourav had not stood
by me then, he would not have won the series and Dada would have lost the captaincy. He came
almost like God and held my hand. I just did my own duty."
Harbhajan added, "Not only did my cricketing career last, but his tenure as a leader was also
extended. He helped me with a chance. But nothing would have happened if I hadn't used it. I'm
glad I was able to do it."
