Virat Kohli made the shocking revelation that he would no longer captain Royal Challengers Bangalore from next year during the first game of the second half of the IPL 2021. Kohli's statement was unexpected, given that he had only recently announced his decision to step down as India's T20I captain. Kohli would not be captain in any capacity for the next four months, whether it was for India or the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Kohli has disclosed why he decided to step down as skipper of the team after guiding it for eight seasons, ahead of the 2022 edition of the IPL, which is set to begin in the first week of April. Kohli commented on a podcast that he is not the type to hold on to stuff longer than necessary. Even though he knows he is capable of much more, he is not going to accomplish it if he is not going to enjoy the process.

The 33-year-old explained that it is tough for others to understand one choice until they've been in one’s shoes. He said that people will always have their own assumptions and get shocked when things change. There's no need to be surprised. He responded that he needed some space and a way to organise his workload, and that's where the narrative ends.

Under Kohli's leadership, RCB's greatest result was in 2016, when they reached the IPL final. Kohli had excelled with the bat, accumulating 973 runs from the start. That is the most runs achieved by a player in a single edition of the IPL and it is still a record. The next several years, however, were not as successful, with RCB came last twice in 2017 and 2019. They made a new chapter in the IPL in the 2020 and 2021 seasons, achieving the Playoffs but failing to qualify for the final.

Kohli commented further that he keeps his life simple and straightforward; when he needed to make a decision, he did so and proclaimed it. He didn't want to think about it or consider it again and again. He added that to him, the quality of life is extremely important. And cricket's quality is something that he places a high value on and it is always quality over quantity.
