Chelsea is close to completing a deal for Sevilla defender Jules Kounde, according to reports.

The Blues are interested in signing the Frenchman this summer. In recent months, he has been widely linked with a move away from Sevilla.

Jules Kounde has accepted personal terms with Chelsea and is set to sign a five-year contract with the Premier League giants. Sevilla is yet to reach a deal with the Blues.

Chelsea offered Sevilla €30 million-plus for Kurt Zouma in exchange for Jules Kounde. The Spanish club turned down the offer because they demanded €45 million for Kurt Zouma.

Since joining Sevilla in the summer of 2019, Jules Kounde has rapidly established himself as one of Europe's most promising young defenders. In his first season, he served the club to win the Europa League, and he performed throughout the 2020-21 season.

Last season, the 22-year-old made 48 appearances for Sevilla in all competitions, scoring four goals. This summer, he was also a member of Didier Deschamps' France squad for Euro 2020.

In the following days, Chelsea is expected to announce Romelu Lukaku for £97.5 million. Chelsea will now turn their attention to Jules Kounde as they attempt to replace veteran centre-back Thiago Silva, on a long-term basis.

So far, the summer transfer window has favoured Manchester United and Manchester City.

Manchester United have signed Jadon Sancho, talented young forwards, and Raphael Varane, a world-class defender. On the other side, Manchester City has strengthened their offensive options by signing Aston Villa's Jack Grealish.

Chelsea is likely to finalise Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan, which desperately needs a striker.

The Blues also require a defender to partner Thiago Silva in the centre of defence and eventually replace him. Jules Kounde's signing will almost certainly address this problem for them.
