On Sunday, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) gave a commanding display to defeat Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by six wickets in match 49th in Dubai.

After losing the toss, KKR bowled first and restricted SRH to 115 for 8, all of their bowlers contributing admirably. Shubman Gill then turned his form into runs, smashing 57 off 51 as KKR cruised to victory in the chase.

In its quest of 116, KKR did not get off to a promising start. Umran Malik, SRH's debutant, bowled at a blistering pace, routinely clocking 140. Jason Holder, on the other hand, was the one who made the breakthrough.

Venkatesh Iyer (8 off 14) appeared out of sorts for the first time and miscued a shot with additional bounce straight up in the air. He misjudged a Rashid Khan pull straight to midwicket. Kane Williamson, the SRH captain, made a tumbling catch. Rahul Tripathi (7), the second in-form KKR hitter, was also dismissed cheaply.

Gill, on the other hand, wore a menacing expression. He started by slamming Holder to the ground before crashing newcomer Malik for a four-point play. Bhuvneshwar Kumar opened the face of the bat in the final over of the powerplay to intrude the gap between backward point and low third.

Gill got KKR off to a good start, going down the track to Rashid and flicking him over midwicket. In consecutive overs from Holder and Malik, the opener continued to assault the SRH bowlers, hitting two fours apiece. By destroying a long hop from Malik to deep midwicket for a boundary, the KKR hitter got his fifty.

Gill's brilliant game came to an end when he flicked a full delivery from Siddarth Kaul to Holder at long-on for 57 runs. Holder then dropped to Nitish Rana (25 off 33), who slogged one straight up to collect the keeper. KKR's Dinesh Karthik (18 not out off 12) completed the game with a couple of crunching boundaries.

They appear to be in a better position than other teams to qualify for the playoffs and clinch the fourth spot, with 12 points from 13 games and a fantastic net run rate of +0.294.
