The Chennai Super Kings have recruited West Indian Dominic Drakes to replace England all-rounder Sam Curran for the remainder of the IPL 2021 season.

This season, Sam Curran, who has played nine games, has been ruled out of the rest of the IPL 2021 and the upcoming T20 World Cup due to a lower back injury.

Drakes' IPL call-up follows a stellar Caribbean Premier League (CPL) season in which he wowed audiences with game-changing performances for St Kitts and Nevis Patriots.

Drakes was the leading wicket-taker for St Kitts. He took 16 wickets at a par of 20.68 and an economy rate of 8.56 in 11 innings.

The 23-year-old batted brilliantly in the CPL's last match against St Lucia Kings, scoring an undefeated 24-ball 48 with three fours and as many sixes.

The uncapped West Indian cricketer has appeared in 19 T20 matches, taking 20 wickets at a par of 28.35 and an economy rate of 8.97. He has a strike rate of 159.37 and has 153 runs in nine innings with his bat.

Meanwhile, the Super Kings will play the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in their last league stage game in Dubai on Thursday in the hopes of securing a top-two finish.

The three-time champions have dropped their last two games, but they are still in good shape to finish in the top two on the table if they defeat KL Rahul's PBKS in their final game.
