Irfan Pathan, a former Indian cricketer, remarked on Monday regarding the selection of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Pathan said that they won't want to lose Venkatesh Iyer. He said that if Iyer enters the auction pool, the all-rounder will be a desirable candidate.

The retention list for IPL 2022 is being prepared by eight IPL teams, with a deadline of the 30th of November. The eight existing squads are allowed to keep no more than three Indian players (capped or uncapped), and no more than two foreign players. After the retentions are revealed, the two new clubs, Ahmedabad and Lucknow, will be able to select players.

The KKR has a lot of options, but Irfan Pathan thinks they'll go with opener Shubman Gill and Venkatesh Iyer as their two Indian selections.

Venkatesh Iyer, who created a name for himself in the UAE leg of the IPL 2021, led the KKR comeback with 370 runs. As the previous champs reached the final earlier this year, the 26-year-old bowled medium pace and picked up three wickets. Iyer made his India debut in the just ended T20I series against New Zealand, following his IPL 2021 achievements.

Pathan told the media that Shubman Gil will be the third member as they said in the leading side a few years ago. Pathan also said that for their 4th choice, he will pick Iyer as he will be a popular option due to his accomplishment to bowl. He added that if Iyer goes to the auction pool, the team is unlikely to be able to reclaim him.

Meanwhile, despite their recent physical and form difficulties, Sunil Narine and Andre Russell will be supported and retained by Kolkata Knight Riders, according to the former India all-rounder. Russell missed getting going before being shelved with an injury in IPL 2021, whereas Narine shined with 16 wickets.

Pathan commented that the team should retain both of these players even though they aren’t at the highest potential in their professions. He added that Narine and Russell are quality players and time is all they need to prove their capability. He also believed that the KKR also is considering Lockie Ferguson as he is a fantastic bowler.

Pathan also hinted that KKR's skipper, Eoin Morgan, might not be retained for the upcoming IPL series. Morgan was under fire for his batsmanship, yet he carried the team to the final.
