Nicholas Pooran sustained during the recently completed 2021 T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates due to a hamstring injury. The 34-year-old is believed to be out of shape and require extra time to restore match fitness.

Nicholas Pooran has been named captain for the T20I series in place of the 34-year-old, while Shai Hope will lead the team in the ODIs. In addition, Pollard's replacements, Devon Thomas and Rovman Powell have been named to the ODI and T20I squads, respectively.

Meanwhile, Pollard will continue his rehabilitation and recovery in Trinidad, under the supervision of physiotherapists and physicians, before the West Indies begin their series against Ireland and England.

The team will arrive in Pakistan on December 9 and play three T20Is and many T20Is from December 13 to 22 at Karachi's National Stadium.

The ODIs will all be part of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League, which guarantees direct qualifying for the top seven countries plus the hosts (India) for the ODI World Cup in 2023. West Indies is now placed eighth out of thirteen teams with four wins and five defeats, although Pakistan is only a spot above them, ranked seventh, with similar wins and losses.

The series will also see the return of fans to the stadium, as the Pakistan Cricket Board has received authorisation from the National Command and Control Center (NCOC). All cricket in Pakistan has been played behind closed doors since the outbreak of the virus. The New Zealand series was expected to draw up to 25% capacity crowds, and however, the visiting team abruptly cancelled the tour due to security concerns.
