Virat Kohli was given the option of resigning as India's ODI captain willingly, but he refused to do so. It caused the BCCI to take matters into their own hands by removing him from his duties.

The claim comes only hours after the BCCI confirmed Rohit Sharma as Team India's new ODI captain in a short social media post. Virat Kohli was always going to lose his ODI captaincy after stepping down from the T20I leadership ahead of the T20 World Cup in the UAE and Oman earlier this year.

The BCCI reportedly attempted to provide an honourable retirement for the long-serving skipper by giving him 48 hours to make the news himself. The 33-year-old, however, turned down the offer, possibly 'daring' the home board to fire him, which it did.

Virat Kohli stood aside as T20I captain to handle his enormous workload, allowing Rohit Sharma to take over in the shortest format. He had expressed his desire to lead India in the 2023 ODI World Cup at the time.

However, since then, rumours have circulated that Sharma will be given the ODI captaincy, owing to the widespread belief that split-captaincy in the two limited-overs formats will not work.

There have also been rumblings regarding Virat Kohli's supposed "lack of communication" with the players in the dressing room. His connection with several coaching staff, including Ravi Shastri, has also been questioned, albeit no concrete evidence has been found.

Meanwhile, supporters have chastised the BCCI for its lack of communication on the shocking decision. Even if there was a rift between the board and the skipper, a major announcement like this, without a word from the selectors or the board, has ensured that rumours will flourish.
