Glenn Maxwell smashed his first Big Bash League century. Unfortunately, it was not sufficient to keep his Melbourne Stars from losing to the Sydney Sixers on Wednesday night.

Josh Philippe shined in the Sixers' run chase, smashing an unbeaten 99 as the visitors reached their mark with two balls to spare and seven wickets in hand.

Maxwell basically single-handedly saved his squad from terrible difficulties when he came to the crease at 2/6 in the third over. Surviving a dropped catch at fine leg, he smashed 12 fours and three sixes at the MCG on his way to his first ever BBL century, lifting his palms in celebration.

Nick Larkin and Hilton Cartwright both scored 23 runs for a Stars batting line-up that was held in check by Steve O'Keefe's spin (1/24 off four overs) and Chris Jordan's variations (1/24 off four overs).

Maxwell told Fox Cricket, that they lost two wickets early on, and the run rate was stagnating, so we decided to take some chances to keep the score moving. He stated that he was lucky but he accepted that in this match. Maxwell explained that he was able to get a couple of simple boundaries off my hip, and they modified their plans to accommodate me. He thought that if they had remained over the stumps, there would have been a few more inconsistencies and scoring would have been a little more difficult. The 33-year-old cricketer said that he took advantage of a little on the wide stuff as the Sixers deviated from their plans, and when they bowled to him, he was able to work with that.

Phillippe’s innings, on the other hand, were similarly impressive. In just 61 balls, the powerful opener came within one run of his personal century, smashing 11 fours and two sixes in the process.

Sixers skipper Moises Henriques delivered a helpful 29 off 20 balls, while Jordan Silk helped ice the game with 25 not out off 19 deliveries. Nathan Coulter-Nile (1/43 off four) and spinner Qais Ahmad (0/40 off 3.4) also took a heavy hammering.

Henriques told the media that it was a very amazing batting that Maxwell has displayed. He stated that Maxwell seemed to hit the ball anywhere the fielders weren't, and Josh, in the end, practically reproduced the same thing, finding a gap whenever they needed a boundary.
