New Zealand's sporting prowess has long seemed extraordinary for a small nation of less than five million people. In rowing, sailing, canoeing, and athletics, the country has produced Olympic champions, and it is a contender in team sports like rugby and cricket. Mitchell Santner, a left-arm spinner from New Zealand, reckons the country's outdoor lifestyle has contributed to its sporting accomplishments.

Santner told the Indian Express that growing up, they were blessed to have so much area to run about in. The 29-year-old said that he played different sports since very young and began to take cricket seriously when he was around 16 years old.

The World Test Championship (WTC) victory against India has given cricket more publicity in a country where it is far behind the All Blacks in terms of popularity.

Santner stated that winning the World Cup was a very unique experience for them. It came after the disappointments of making it to the 2015 (World Cup) final and then being drawn in 2019 final. He added that this time they went on to do one better and finally won a major title for the first time. He commented that the Black Caps are currently one of the best teams in the world, and this will inspire future generations to take up cricket. There has been a transition in cricket in New Zealand in recent years, as evidenced by the team's results and a lot of people are watching cricket now.

Santner added that New Zealand's fan culture is nothing like that of India or Pakistan. However, there is a lot of buzz around cricket following the 2019 World Cup final.

The Kiwi spinner praised the New Zealand domestic cricket system for all of the talents that have made it to the national squad, despite the fact that it only has six teams.

Santner has also played for Chennai Super Kings(CSK) in the IPL under MS Dhoni, in addition to his New Zealand captain Kane Williamson. He describes them as two of cricket's calmest players, although they have contrasting leadership styles.

Regarding the leadership of Dhoni, he said that Dhoni has good instinct, has led the squad in many games and been in a lot of challenging times. He explained that Dhoni simply has a gift for foreseeing what will occur in the match and from behind the stumps, he'll give the players fantastic views. Santner added that it has been an honour to be a part of CSK for the past four years and to play under one of our generation's finest captains and cricketers.

Responding to Williamson’s captaincy, Santner stated that the Kiwi captain, on the other hand, is someone who meticulously plans ahead of time. He said that Williamson has a calm and comfortable demeanour and it is beneficial to one as a player when under pressure.

Santner has captained New Zealand in three T20Is, the most recent of which was against India in Kolkata. He told the media that being up close and personal with players like Brendon McCullum, MS Dhoni, and Kane Williamson has benefited him.

He stated that over the years, he has had the privilege of playing under McCullum, Williamson, and Dhoni. He said that he took notes from his captains and strives to put them into practice when he leads the team. He added that he will be OK as a captain if he can pick up a few pointers from their rulebooks.
