Real Madrid faced Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish Super Cup final on Sunday night after defeating Barcelona 3-2 in the semi-final.

Los Blancos, who was knocked from the same competition last year by Bilbao, were out for revenge and came away with a well-deserved 2-0 victory. The win gave them their first trophy of the season, ending an 18-month trophy drought.

The leaders were anticipated to triumph against the ninth-best team in La Liga, especially following their semi-final victory over arch-rivals Barcelona. Real Madrid was well aware that they were the clear favourites from the start and made a point of emphasising this. Their passing, movement, and organisation were all superior to Bilbao's, and the end outcome was a formality.

Real Madrid consistently made advances inside the Bilbao box, despite their inability to find the fatal touch. After several close calls, the goal ultimately arrived in the 38th minute from the legendary Luka Modric's right boot. The Croatian curled the ball home with ease in true Modricesque fashion.

Real Madrid was awarded a disputed penalty in the second half when Yeray Alvarez was found guilty of handling Karim Benzema's goal-bound shot. The Frenchman stood over the ball and easily converted it to give the Royals a two-goal lead.

Eder Militao was penalised for a professional handball in the 85th minute, giving Bilbao a penalty of their own. Fortunately for Los Blancos, Thibaut Courtois was more than equal to the challenge and denied Bilbao any hope.
