Since its inception, the HBL Pakistan
Super League has spawned enthralling competitions. It has put the finest of the globe against
one another, bringing international teammates face to face, making for thrilling entertainment
for fans all across the world.
The 7th edition of the HBL PSL will take place from January 27th to February 27th. It will bring more intriguing competitions to the audience. This includes a match between the country's finest batter and bowler, Babar Azam of the Karachi Kings and Shaheen Afridi of the Lahore Qalandars.
Both cricket stars have played an important role in the national team's preparations. They were vital to Pakistan's success in 2021, when they won a record-breaking 20 T20Is, the most by any club in a calendar year.
Azam and Afridi both came into the HBL PSL 7 in top shape.
In the previous year, Azam added 1,779 runs to his total of 7,471 T20 runs. This achievement made him the second-best batter in terms of runs. This is just behind Pakistani opening partner Mohammad Rizwan's result. The right-hander hit two centuries and 18 half-centuries in his career, averaging over 48 and a strike rate of 131.38.
In 2021, Afridi was one of four pacers who took more than 50 T20 wickets. At a strike rate of 16.4, the left-armer’s thunderbolts added 51 scalps to his tally, each for 21.50 runs. Last year, he averaged 7.82 runs per innings. This is a testament to his exceptional control throughout the game, especially given how punishing this format has been for bowlers.
Azam and Afridi have faced each other seven times in the HBL PSL, with the results being fairly even. In the previous HBL PSL, Afridi bowled 46 deliveries to Azam, getting him out once – bowled, off stump knocked over.
Both have outstanding performances in the opening six overs of an innings in the HBL PSL, and are set to meet in this highly anticipated event. Afridi’s 6.66 economy rate is the best among pacers who have taken at least 10 wickets. Meanwhile, Azam has a 77.42 batting average in this phase, the highest for a batter with 500 runs, and has only been struck out 7 times in 34 innings.
Karachi Kings and Lahore Qalandars will clash on 30 January at Karachi's National Stadium and 18 February at Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium.
